Well, join the club of millions of men, women, children who all have some problems with sleep sometime during their lives. Everyone has had those occasional nights where you turn and toss all night and then wake up feeling as if you haven’t slept any at all. And any parent knows about the nights when your child or baby is up most of the night with bad dreams are who knows what – those nights when they just wake up crying and so your sleep also gets interrupted.

A few nights of sleeping problems usually doesn’t have any lasting effect but continual nights with lack of sleep can cause health problems to develop no matter what your age is. Children with ongoing sleep problems need to have the reasons for the problem resolved.

Something as simple as a stuffed animal making shadows on the wall could be the problem. And take the TV out of the child’s room. The child needs to have the same bedtime every night. Don’t give the child any sugar, soda or chocolate before bedtime because all three are stimulants which lead to problems with sleep.

Trouble sleeping for adults can be caused from a variety of reasons – from an old, lumpy mattress to worrying about things that you really have no control over. Most of the time, your sleeping pattern returns to normal in a few days.

So, if you can’t sleep, go into another room and watch TV or read and you eventually will get sleepy and ready for bed. Insomnia is a problem when it becomes chronic and when it begins to affect your health. There are many OTC (over-the-counter) sleeping aids that are very effective that can help with sporadic problems sleeping at night.

If you are one of those lucky people that work from home, you need to take a break and relax before you try to go to sleep. Your bedroom should be only a place for rest and should be stress free. And just like children, adults should avoid any stimulants before bedtime.

Occasional trouble sleeping is not a problem until you begin to see problems developing with your health because of the lack of sleep or if these sleep problems last longer than a couple of weeks.

Are you looking for help in sleeping? Perhaps this article can provide you with some tips to cure insomnia.

Insomnia is when you have difficulty going to sleep. It also can mean you have difficulty staying asleep. Those who suffer with insomnia say they toss and turn all night long or can remember being awake during night. When I have insomnia I can’t seem to stop my mind from racing and sometimes can’t even shut my eyes.

The best sleep aids are the natural sleep aids and natural aids should always be tried first to help with occasional insomnia. Included in these are reducing stress by using relaxation or visualization techniques, making changes such as stopping smoking, cutting down or eliminating caffeine, eliminating any naps during the day, and getting as much light as possible during your waking hours. Other natural sleep aids are small things such as starting to eat better as well as beginning an exercise program.

It is important to manage the stress in your life as this allows you to more easily relax at night or when it’s time to sleep. Another helpful method is to connect the bedroom with sleeping by limiting the time spent in the bedroom for non-sleep activities. So take your television, computer and office out of the bedroom. Also reduce the use of stimulants such as caffeine and avoid large meals just before bed as this can help reduce insomnia. A person can also try soaking in a hot bath to relax or listening to some soft music before going to bed.

There are many herbal sleep aids that have been used for years by people who have trouble sleeping. One of the most common is called Valerian and has been used for years in Europe for help with insomnia. In the United States Valerian is sold as a dietary supplement. It is not certain how this herb works, but studies have shown that Valerian does help with sleep and also with stress. Valerian does have some side effects so before taking this herbal supplement; you should discuss taking it with your pharmacist – especially if you are on any other prescription medications.

Melatonin is an aid to help with sleep — especially for those who suffer from sleeplessness from doing shift work or from jet lag while traveling. Melatonin is a natural hormone produced when serotonin, another hormone, is exposed to the decreasing light at night. Melatonin does have some side effects and is not recommends for use by anyone with depression, autoimmune diseases, schizophrenia, or other serious illness. Pregnant women and those who are nursing should not use melatonin.

Other common over-the-counter (OTC) sleep medication such as Nytol or Sominex can be tried but, again, a person should discuss with their doctor before taking any of these sleep aids especially if you suffers from or are being treated for depression, other mental health problems, or Parkinson’s disease.

In the end, the best help to fall asleep is naturally by correcting any poor sleep habits. . Taking a pill for a problem is buying into the mindset of turning to a pill to solve a problem which can cause problems in other areas of a person’s life. So popping a pill should be a measure of last resource.

There are many herbal teas on the market for sleep problems such as insomnia

Insomnia is when you have difficulty going to sleep. It also can mean you have difficulty staying asleep. Those who suffer with insomnia say they toss and turn all night long or can remember being awake during night. When I have insomnia I can’t seem to stop my mind from racing and sometimes can’t even shut my eyes.

The best way to fall asleep is to have good sleep habits or to use natural sleep aids. There are behavioral or natural treatments for insomnia. One relaxation techniques is practiced by tensing muscles and then relaxing each muscle one at a time. Another technique is to repeat a set of visualizations which produces a relaxed state. My favorite visualization is lying in the sun on a white beach on the Gulf Coast somewhere.

It is also good to be able to manage the stress in your life as allows you to be more relaxed at night or when it is time to go to sleep. Another helpful process is to relate the bedroom with sleeping by restricting the time spent in the bedroom for non-sleep activities. So take your television, computer and office out of the bedroom. Also reduce the use of stimulants such as caffeine and avoid large or spicy meals just before bed as this can help reduce insomnia. A person can also try soaking in a hot bath to relax or listening to some soft music before going to bed.

There are several herbs that are known to be helpful for people suffering for insomnia. One herb used as a sleeping aid is Valerian and has been used in Europe for years for help with insomnia. It is sold in the United States only as a dietary supplement. It has shown that it help with insomnia and also stress. There are side effects that have been reported; therefore it is important that you discuss taking Valerian with your druggist especially if you take any prescriptions for other medical conditions. A tea from Valerian root has the odor of cat urine so it is best to take this herb in a pill.

Kava is an anti-anxiety herb that may be helpful for anxiety-related insomnia. But this herb has been banned in some countries as it has been shown to cause liver damage.

Several plants have sedative action. Plants commonly prescribed as aids in promoting sleep include passionflower, skullcap, and chamomile.

There is also a tea made with lemonbalm, flavor of mint, chamomile, and some professionals put in catnip.

For insomnia, take one or two cupfuls of an herbal tea in the evening about one half to one hour before bedtime. An additional cup can be taken in the night if you wake up.

Reduce the dosage of herbs taken by 50% for children under five years old and by 25% for children under twelve. But I would strongly recommend talking to a professional herbalist and your family doctor before giving any herbs to children. In fact, I strongly recommend not giving any herbs or drugs to children as this buys into the mindset to take a pill or substance for every problem a person has and in children this can lead to problems later in life with drugs or substance abuse.

This is an overview of available herbs for sleeping.

As you enter your teenage years, it is important to make sure that you get enough sleep and that you sleep well. Most teenagers sleep different amounts of time. This is the time in your life to start developing those good sleep habits that you will use for a lifetime.

A well used and healthy body usually has few problems sleeping. Unfortunately, during the teenager years are when too much junk food is eaten and teenagers also get very little exercise unless they are into sports. You might consider getting into a sport of some type so you can get the exercise that you need.

Stress is the number one cause of short-term sleeping problems, according to sleep experts. Common stressors include school problems, so entering the junior high years can often trigger a problem with sleep. Most of the sleep problems will go away when the temporary stressful situation is over. However, if short-term sleep problems such as insomnia aren’t managed correctly from the beginning, they can continue long after the original stress has passed and continue to cause sleep problems into adulthood.

Sleep allows your body to actively recharge itself and prepare for the next day. Sleeping well enables you to feel, think, and perform better. Sleep is also the time when hormone production is regulated. In young people this means that human growth hormone or HGH is released during deep sleep. So, poor sleep will affect the hormone balance. Sleep also helps with better daytime concentration in school.

A pre-teen or teenager who gets enough sleep and sleeps well is more likely to be cheerful during the day. The better the teenager sleeps, the happier the while family will be. Sleeping is probably the most important activity of your day. Sleeping well enables you to feel, think, and perform better.

Teens often struggle with depression and depression can be a major cause of insomnia. If your teenager is having a problem with depression, you should take them to your primary care physician for a physical to make certain there aren’t any serious medical conditions that need consideration

A National Sleep Foundation survey found that college and university-aged students get an average of 6.8 hours of sleep each night. A full class load, working and often too much partying are the main factors to lack of sleep among college students

Caffeine has an effect on sleep. It is a cause of restlessness and insomnia. Sugar can give a burst of energy but it’s short-lived and then there is a sugar crash.. This can interrupt sleep as blood sugar levels fall. This is the time in life to develop good habits in curbing use of caffeine and switching to a lifestyle change of drinking large amounts of water. This is a much healthier way to live instead of drinking cans and cans of soda pop.

Whole grain snacks are good for helping with sleep as they contain tryptophan which is an amino acid similar to serotonin, which is converted to melatonin – a sleep hormone that occurs naturally. Carbohydrate snacks before bedtime can help to promote sleep.

Exposure to light plays a role in telling the body when to go to sleep and when to wake up. Music is a great way to help to improve sleep. Music has been found to improve sleep quality, and lengthen sleep time. So every teen should have access to a radio or CD player in their room especially as they go to college.

This speech should be given to teens and their parent at every junior high orientation.

Sleeplessness is just another word that is used for occasional insomnia. Occasional insomnia is those sporadic nights when you have trouble falling asleep, or when you seem to toss and turn all night. This lack of good quality sleep can distress you by causing you to be drowsy during the day, have problems concentrating, or just not feeling alert. In fact, all you can probably think about is just getting home and taking a catnap.

Humans and other animals (also plants) have biological clocks called circadian rhythms. These circadian rhythms are managed by your internal clock. This clock affects alertness, body temperature, hormone release, appetite, and mostly affects the timing of sleep. There are a multitude of things that can affect this timing and cause a night of restless sleep. Among these things are too much caffeine, minor pains, smoking, too hot or cold – all which can for the short term cause sleeplessness. Business executives can experience this with jet lag as well as worrying over problems at work.

A night or two of sleeplessness can make you feel tired and not fully alert during the day. But as long as insomnia is not happening every night, it is really not the kind of sleeplessness that causes serious problems. A health problem that is fatal is rarely the cause of short time problems with sleep. But since insomnia is a symptom of many illnesses or medical problems, it is best that if you experience this problem continuously for two weeks, you should make an appointment with your doctor.

There are many tips to help with short term insomnia. For example, go to bed and get up at the same time each day. Don’t eat a big meal immediately before going to bed. Also, don’t do strenuous exercises during the evening as this can “wakes” the body up.

Worrying or stress needs be turned off at night. A good way to do this is to do visualization. In your mind, you can visualize something like this. If you work with computers, visualize yourself typing all the problems and worries of the day into the computer. Then you save your work on the hard drive. Then you visualize turning off the computer for the night with all your stress and problems saved in the computer for the night. Or you can make up a scenario of your own. I have a stress box from Peru which has little straw people in it. Each night I name each person a different problem, put all the problems in the little box and put the box under my pillow.

For those people with healthy circadian clocks, there are people who favor sleeping and waking early, people who like to sleep and wake at late times, and also every type in between. But no matter whether you are a night owl or early bird – if you have a normal internal clock, you will wake in time for what you need to do in the morning, and fall asleep at night in time to get enough sleep before having to get up.

Sleeplessness in most cases is simply a short-lived occurrence, with one or two nights of sleeping poorly, and then you return to normal sleep. But if sleeplessness continues for more than 2 weeks — make an appointment to see your doctor.

Perhaps this article can provide you with some helpful information.

The sources for insomnia are many and can be anxiety, stress, medications, too much caffeine, depression or other mental conditions. And often it sometimes happens for no reason at all. Pain anywhere or an overactive mind may be causes. Finding the cause of insomnia is sometime the hardest problem but it the most necessary to cure it.

If you believe you are not getting enough sleep or that you are suffering from insomnia, talk to your family doctor. If your family physician feels that you may suffer from insomnia and helpful tips for dealing with insomnia are not helping, he may ask that you keep a sleep diary, or even have you stay overnight at a sleep center so your sleep patterns can be monitored.

There are behavioral or natural treatments for insomnia. One relaxation techniques is practiced by tensing muscles and then relaxing them.

Sleep disorders is now a medical subspecialty with doctors who specialize in sleep medicine. These sleep doctors detect and treat common and rare sleep disorders. Common sleep disorders are jet lag, insomnia, sleepwalking, sleep apnea, and snoring.

Seeing that your child gets enough sleep and sleeps well is tremendously important. Tired children have problems with development and behavior. Sleep problems with children can cause needless stress for the entire family. Experts advise the following sleep hours for children; infants from 3 to 11 months should sleep 14 to 15 hours, toddlers 12 to 14 hours, preschoolers 11 to 13 hours and school age children 10 to 11 hours.

If your child has any of these problems with sleep, they could be on the way to a chronic sleep disorder. The problems are, a parent having to spend too much time helping the child fall asleep; the child waking up continually during the night; snoring loudly or struggling to breathe; or mood, behavior or performance at school changes.

When this is a problem for more than several weeks, take your child to a pediatrician or a sleep specialist. Your doctor may suggest that your child spend a night or a nap period in a sleep center so their sleep cycle can be studied and also to help diagnose any medical problems.

The stress and pressure of a job, demands so much of a man’s time that it often doesn’t leave much room for sleep. The body wants to rest, but the mind won’t stop spinning. So, many men do not get much sleep on a regular basis. The following are signs that a man may not be getting enough sleep or have already developed a sleep disorder. They include being unable to pay attention during meetings, having to use an alarm clock to wake up on time every morning or just not feeling well.

As the problems with sleep continue, depression can disrupt the quality of a man’s sleep. The man might lie in bed tossing and turning late into the night. As poor sleep continues, men stop taking care of their bodies in many ways. They often stop exercising regularly and stopping eating or begin overeating. They are more likely to abuse drugs or alcohol. Statistics show that men are four times as likely as women to commit suicide.

So if a man experiences sleep problems that last more than two weeks, they too should visit a sleep expert or family physician.

Experts suggest that most men and women need about seven to eight hours of sleep each night. Women usually sleep more than men, going to bed earlier and falling asleep easier. A woman’s sleep is not as deep as a man’s and it is easier to disturb a woman during sleep.

Women also describe sleep problems using different terms than men. Women will be less likely to say that they feel sleepy during the day. Women instead will often say that they feel unrested, tired, or fatigued. These terms reveal feelings of mental or physical exhaustion. Women may also report a lack of energy or vitality.

There are numerous complex factors that affect how women sleep. Many of these factors change over time. Extreme daytime sleepiness is most common when women are in their 20s to 30s, while older women appear to adapt better to periods of sleep loss.
This difference has been attributed to the many commitments that compete for a young woman’s time. In particular working mothers, who balance the demands of career, family, friends and personal health needs.

Sleeping disorders are believed to affect millions of women. These problems with sleep very often remain undiagnosed. There are close to 81 sleep disorders that are most likely to affect women, with the causes being different depending on age and hormone factors.

Sleep deprivation is extremely dangerous and studies have shown that it can cause over 50 serious sleeping disorders. Sleep deprivation have many symptoms. Lack of sleep can result in some fatal medical problems.

Symptoms of sleep deprivation can include depression, aching muscles and inability to concentrate. Severe sleep deprivation can result in weakened immune system, hypertension, hallucination, psychosis symptoms, bad reaction time and symptoms similar to Attention Deficit Disorder and being intoxicated from alcohol or drugs. This can show how serious going without sleep is.

Since we live in a mobile society with millions of autos on the road, sleep depravation can cause profound effects on a driver’s reaction time and this could be the most troubling symptom. This not only effects your life but the lives of many others who are driving on the same roads that you are.

A 2000 study that was published in the British Medical Journal from researchers in New Zealand and Australia reported that sleep deprivation has some of the same perilous effects as being drunk. Drivers who have been awake for up to 19 hours drive as badly as someone with a blood alcohol level of .05%. Statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show that over 100,000 accidents every year in the United States are caused by drowsiness or fatigue. The most significant errors usually occur after the 2nd night of no sleep.

A 1996 study done at the University of Chicago Medical Center demonstrated that sleep deprivation severely affects the body’s capacity to metabolize glucose leading to early stages of Type-2 diabetes.

A study done in 2001 by the Chicago Medical Institute shows that sleep deprivation can be linked to heart disease, and mental problems such as bipolar disorder. A University of California study done in 2003 showed that REM sleep deprivation leads to clinical depression. How this happens is not clear but it believes that the sleep deprivation mimics the effects of serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI). The study showed that the first evidence of brain damage in mice happens as a result of sleep deprivation. These animal studies show that sleep deprivation can increase stress hormones which often reduces new cell production in adult brains.

In many countries sleep deprivation is considered torture and there has been debate in the US about using this as an interrogation technique in Afghanistan and Iraq. Prisoners are kept awake for a number of days, and then are at last allowed to fall asleep. They are then abruptly awakened for questioning. The mind of the prisoner has become hazy, the spirit is weakened, legs are unsteady and the prisoner only has one desire which is to sleep. This desire is worse than thirst or hunger.

It is one of the medical problems that can sometimes cause insomnia. A person with sleep apnea may think that the only problem he has is insomnia when in fact insomnia is only a symptom of the main medical problem of sleep apnea.

Sleep apnea is the repeated stopping of breathing during the night while sleeping. A person who lives alone will probably not know that this is occurring. But if they have anyone sleeping with them, this other person will probably notice the recurrent stopping of breathing which is then followed by gasping to breathe. This is called apnea and every time this occurs during the night, the normal sleep cycle is disturbed and this is what causes the insomnia symptoms.

Anyone suffering with sleep apnea, wake up before they go thru a sufficient amount of stage 3 and stage 4 non-REM or delta sleep. It is during these stages of deep sleep when the muscle tissues, brain, cardiovascular as well as the hormone system — repair themselves from the damage that has happened while awake during the day.

When insomnia occurs continually night after night for over two weeks is when many symptoms can develop – being sleepy during the day, waking up feeling unrested, falling asleep while driving or at work. The longer insomnia occurs, the worst these symptoms become. A person can even begin experiencing problems with memory, depression and learning difficulties.

If this insomnia is actually caused by sleep apnea, symptoms can continue to get worse. The person suffering with sleep apnea can actually develop personality changes, extremely loud snoring, sweating during the night, swift weight gain, and often waking up with a headache. A person experiencing these symptoms or having insomnia for over two weeks, it is extremely important that they visit with their primary care physician for a complete medical checkup.

This does not mean that everyone who snores at night has sleep apnea. And even through overweight people most often have sleep apnea, thin people can have it also. People with sleep apnea often don’t realize they have it, but they will eventually notice the physical symptoms of having this sleep problem.

Other problems that the doctor will often notice is the person may have or be bordering on high blood pressure and could also have developed heart trouble, or diabetes. The doctor may even send the patient to a sleep center where their sleep will be monitored for a night. These sleep studies will show how many times a night a person stops breathing. Those with sleep apnea which is severe may often stop breathing hundreds of times a night. This stopping can be for a few seconds to as long as ten minutes in really severe cases. Your doctor will take the results of these studies and be able to diagnose true sleep apnea or decide if your insomnia is caused by another health problem.

In most cases, the patient with only a slight case of sleep apnea can be helped by a natural sleep aid or by treating the underlying medical problem. But in other cases some lifestyle changes may need to be made – such as stopping smoking, exercising more, or losing weight. If the sleep apnea is severe, and is causing severe health problems, the doctor will need to treat the sleep apnea as well as any medical problems the apnea has caused. In severe cases where the apnea is caused by airway obstruction, there are several treatments; including a device that can be used at night, as well as sleep apnea surgery to remove or reduce any obstructions.

When sleep apnea is left undiagnosed or untreated, the odds of strokes, heart attacks or high blood pressure increase as well as the odds of developing diabetes, increased risk of injuries caused at work or accidents while driving. Therefore it is most important that anyone who has long term chronic insomnia be checked by their doctor as quickly as possible.
